Scrum Master at Oportun (Redwood City, CA)

This is a highly visible role, reporting directly to the VP of Engineering & IT. In the role of Scrum Master, you will be the driver our teams process, ceremonies and ultimately, delivery of products to our business.


In that context, we are looking for a leader— a scrum master that is comfortable getting into the details of the work, but ultimately, someone that the team looks to drive how our work gets done.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


Drive Planning + Commitment


As our teams scrum-master, one of the largest expectations is your ability to drive planning + commitment to what we'll be executing across the team.  


1. Facilitate Planning Sessions



  • Work with  Tech Leads to determine what the planning sessions are that are required: PdM + Area Leads, Areas Leads + Teams and Cross-Functional Teams


2. Develop Capacity Plan + Allocation Model



  • Develop a capacity plan (detailed view) based on the FTE + Contract Devs and their available hours throughout the Sprint timeline.  

  • Drive the Engineering leads to complete estimation + assignment of stories in the backlog

  • Develop a capacity allocation (detailed view) based on estimates + assignment of stories in the backlog.

  • Work with Eng Leads in order to re-assign stories if specific individuals are out of balance 


3. Facilitate Trade-Offs / Additions to Sprint



  • As a function of allocation model, facilitate with PdM + Dept Head documenting the potential trade-offs in order to get a net capacity that is not over allocated.

  • Facilitate with PdM + Dept Head + Eng Leads the addition of stories into sprint in order to bring utilization to at least 85% - 90% of available capacity

  • Facilitate obtaining sing-off of trade-offs from other stakeholders


4. Communicate Plan



  • Communicate the recommended Sprint to Dept Head and seek approval

  • Communicate approved Sprint to other stakeholders (members of Projects Council)


Drive Accountability


As our teams scrum-master, one the greatest expectations is driving accountability to the commitments we made to each other and to the business.  That means…



  • Monitor and track progress of stories

  • Predict blocking issues

  • Keep members of the team honest in what they are 'signing up for'

  • Run with blockers as they occur

  • Drive cross-functional team work if you see something not happening

  • Report sprint status (health) to PMO in agreed upon frequency + format



Constantly Refine Our Process


As our teams scrum-master, you are master of the process.  In that context, we look to you to:



  • Drive the development of our process

  • Work with the team leads to evangelize and adopt it

  • Constantly look for ways to make our process better

  • Ensure the tools we use (and their configuration) do not get in the way, but enable + add value to the process
